Curating ? spaces, neglected place, unseen stories in urban with nature solutions
Welcome to Jade Liu's path toward becoming a Chartered Landscape Architect. I am committed to uncovering untold stories and identifying opportunities for transforming neglected urban spaces. My goal as a future Landscape Architect is to analyse these overlooked areas and implement ecological solutions to address climate change effectively.

My three years of design foundation training have provided me with a solid understanding of design thinking and critical process development. This training has ignited my passion for Landscape Architecture. I played a significant role in organizing the presentation materials for the 2021 Hong Kong Landscape Architecture Annual Dinner. Subsequently, I received the Alistair Harvey Foundation Scholarship, which funded my one-year academic exchange at the University of Gloucestershire. This experience expanded my perspectives, allowing me to apply a process-led, self-learning methodology, contrasting with the fast-paced, result-oriented approaches common in Hong Kong. It has enhanced my ability to work independently and effectively.

In my final year, I focused on neglected spaces—a concern I have contemplated since childhood while walking through alleyways with my father. Each visit to Sham Shui Po during apartment renovations with him prompted me to reflect on the potential within these areas. This project was particularly rewarding, as it marked my first opportunity to lead the methodological process. I organised an observation workshop followed by reflective discussions in collaboration with the Hong Kong Youth Women’s Christian Association (YWCA). Additionally, I engaged with locals—including coffee shop owners, rubbish collectors, and representatives from homeless organizations—during the research phase.

In summary, I am particularly interested in working closely with local organizations and residents throughout the project, especially during the design phase. Inviting locals to participate in shaping the community they envision is crucial, rather than imposing designs as landscape architects. We can leverage our professional expertise and creativity to enhance both the aesthetic and functional aspects of these spaces, ultimately contributing to sustainable and meaningful urban environments.
